Forensic Science
Student Research Grant
Application Deadline: June 30, 2010
Awards Announcement: No Later Than October 1, 2010
Purpose:
The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) has partnered with
the Forensic Sciences Foundation (FSF) to begin a
collaborative relationship of shaping the next generation of
forensic scientists. The FSF will offer scholarships to
undergraduate and graduate students of FEPAC accredited
programs at Colleges/Universities. This is a three year
program with individual awards being made in August 2009,
August 2010, and August 2011. Award amounts will vary, but
will not exceed $7,000 per award. Each submission will be
peer-reviewed by the award committee and NIJ, and awards
will be made based on, but not limited to, the quality and
technical merit of each proposal, impact of the proposed
project, and capabilities/experience of the applicant.
Evaluation of Grant Proposals:
Grant proposals will be
evaluated on the following criteria:
1. Originality
of the research project.
2. Contribution
of the research to improving the analysis of forensic
evidence and/or understanding forensic science.
3. Ability
of the student to use the scientific method to formulate a
hypothesis and generate a conclusion.
4. Ability
of the student to properly collect and analyze data.
5. Ability
of the student to write a research proposal in clear and
concise language which lays out the issue and proposes a
solution.
6. Potential
for success in the research.
7. Appropriateness
of monetary request as measured against the potential for
success.
Eligibility:
The applicant must be a full or part-time undergraduate or
graduate student in a FEPAC accredited program. Grant
proposals can be submitted with more than one name on the
application. However, all students must be from the same
FEPAC accredited college/university.
Required Attachments:
The applicant must include the following documentation.
Incomplete submissions will not be considered for this
award.

*Budget Note:
items which are not eligible for funding
through this grant include direct or indirect
administrative expenses of the applicants’ university,
salaries, paid assistance, permanent equipment and
expenses for remote site activities.

Special Terms and Conditions:
If the applicant is awarded and accepts the award amount,
he/she must comply with the following:
1. A detailed progress report will be due every six
months if research is longer than 1 year.
2. A project completion report will be due at
completion.
3. Results suitable for oral presentation, poster
presentation, published abstract or paper must be
proffered first to the American Academy of Forensic
Sciences (AAFS) annual meeting committee or to the
editor of the Journal of Forensic Sciences.
A two-year follow up report which documents the following
will be requested from the awardees college/university:

Publications
·
Thesis
·
Advanced degrees
·
Other scholarly activities
attributable or in part to
the original award
There is an inherent
understanding on the part of the Foundation that the student
may have departed the institution. There is also an
expectation that the FEPAC accredited university should make
every effort to notify the Foundation of the information
requested above. This notification will be important in
future consideration should additional grant money become
available.
